About

Main Four started because too many capable teams were stuck behind a six-month vendor queue for something a focused pair of engineers could ship in six weeks. We kept the team small on purpose — it is the only way the people you meet stay the people who build.

Why we exist

Every one of us has sat on the other side of this. You know exactly what your team needs. You have a rough architecture in your head. And the estimate comes back as two quarters and a number with too many zeros, most of which pays for people who will never open the repository.

The gap is not talent. It is overhead. Large firms carry account managers, delivery managers, and a bench, and all of it lands on your invoice before a line of code is written.

We run without that layer. Four senior people, direct contact from the first call through handoff, and fixed prices you approve before work starts. It means we turn down work that does not fit. It also means when we say six weeks, we mean six weeks.

Principles

Six rules we actually follow, not six words on a wall.

These get invoked in real arguments about real tradeoffs. That is the only test of whether a principle is load-bearing.

01

The demo is the status report

Percentages complete are a story. Working software on a staging URL is a fact. Every sprint ends with something you can click.

02

Boring technology, deliberately

Postgres before a new database. A queue before a service mesh. We spend novelty budget on the part of your problem that is actually novel, and nowhere else.

03

Write it down

Architecture decisions, tradeoffs considered, and why we rejected the alternatives. Six months later, when someone asks why, the answer exists in your repo.

04

Automate the judgment-free work only

Data entry, reconciliation, routing — automate all of it. The call that needs twenty years of context stays with the human who has it.

05

Leave it better staffed than we found it

A successful engagement ends with your team confidently owning the code. If we are still load-bearing a year later, we did the handoff badly.

06

Say the uncomfortable thing early

A scope problem raised in week two is a conversation. The same problem in week ten is a crisis. We would rather have the awkward conversation.

Process

How an engagement runs, start to finish.

Same five phases every time. The durations move; the sequence does not.

  1. 01

    Diagnose

    Week 0 · Free

A working session with your team to find where time and money actually leak. You leave with a written opportunity map and a rough ROI model — whether or not you hire us.

  2. 02

    Blueprint

    Weeks 1–2

Architecture, scope, and a fixed-price plan with milestones. No open-ended discovery phase billed by the hour.

  3. 03

    Build

    Weeks 2–10

Two-week sprints with a working demo at the end of each one. You get access to the repo and a staging environment from day one.

  4. 04

    Harden

    Pre-launch

Load testing, security review, observability, and runbooks. We treat "it works on staging" as the halfway point.

  5. 05

    Hand off

    Ongoing

Documentation, recorded walkthroughs, and paired sessions with your engineers. You own the code outright — plus a support window on every engagement.

Tooling

What we build with.

Deliberately conventional. We spend our novelty budget on your problem, not on the infrastructure underneath it.

Work with us

Small team, short queue.

We take on a handful of engagements at a time, which is why the first call is with the person who would build it. Tell us what you are up against.
